Teaching Practicum & Portfolio
For 2 years now I have had the pleasure of teaching this innovative course. What I love about this course is how it is centered on providing a meaningful investment for the learner personally. The model strikes a good balance between independence and guidance. The course model has graduate students work through asynchronous project work with weekly progress submissions, facilitated by weekly one-on-one advising sessions with me, the professor.
The projects themselves are meaningful in that they are tangible deliverables, materials graduate students need going onto the job market as new faculty, and pedagogical best practices to help new faculty take on their teaching responsibilities with confidence.
The one-on-one advising sessions are meaningful in that they provide an opportunity for each learner to carve a path towards accomplishment in a way that is of personal value to the learner, and their career goals.
Advising sessions also provide an opportunity to focus and scaffold the corse in a way that achieves academic growth with positive mental health, based on each learners individual needs.
This class structures your progress through the teaching practicum and completion of all the teaching portfolio items for the College Teaching Certificate. In this course, you will apply the principles and frameworks from “Transdisciplinary Pedagogy for Ethical Education” into practice. The class is presented through an online, asynchronous format with advising modules and a structured assignment submission and feedback process. Using the work that you began in “Transdisciplinary Pedagogy for Ethical Education”, you will complete your teaching philosophy statement, diversity statement, and sample course design and syllabus. In addition, you will develop a sample learning management system course and a teacher-scholar website. The course culminates in a final integrated reflection of your entire PFF journey toward becoming an inclusive, future-focused educator.
By the end of this course, you should be able to demonstrate:
- Demonstrate critical analysis and defense of the importance of inclusive equitable education for an emerging world
- Connect and demonstrate a critical analysis (reflexivity) and support of beliefs, values, and goals as a future-oriented, inclusive, and agile educator
- Design inclusive and active learning experiences at the philosophical & practical level
- Analyze teaching and learning dynamics and strategies
- Demonstrate the ability to integrate a variety of teaching technology into your course and lesson design
